Country of the Lotus Eaters
in Homer's Odyssey the Country of the Lotus Eaters is where Odysseus an his crew sailed to after plundering the Kikones tribe of Ismarus. Could this land be Djerba [1]] an island off the coast of Tunisia.
Another theory is that given the prevailing winds and the fact that they were sailing for nine days he may have made it through the Straits of Gibralter to Casablanca. Homer states clearly this is mainland not an island, which rules out Djerba. Casablanca is also a well known area for narcotic drugs over many thousands or years, but we should be wary trying to find reasons to support the thesis. Like many of the locations visited by Odysseus if Homer wanted us to work out the exact locations of these lands then it would have been made clear. In fact these islands or lands were convenient devices and backdrops where adventures could take place.
Although Casablanca as merit as the Country of the Lotus Eaters, its locations seems to make us stray too far from locus Sicily where most of the adventures take place. For that reason I will stick with Djerba.
