Samothrace is a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea. It is a municipality within the Evros regional unit of Thrace. The island is 17 km (11 mi) long and is 178 km2 (69 sq mi) in size and has a population of 2,723 (2001 census). Its main industries are fishing and tourism

Samotrace is mentioned obliquely in Jason and the Argonauts as the island of Elektra. She was the mountain nymph of Mount Saon on the island. She was loved by Zeus and bore him two sons, Dardanos, ancestor of the Trojan royal family, and Iasion, founder of the Samothrakian Mysteries. She was also entrusted with the fostering of Aphrodite's illegitimate daughter Harmonia.
