Background details

Summoned by Bells is an autobiography written in prose by Sir John Betjeman. A short letter from Sir John Betjeman to Robert Maugham [1], the novelist and playwright (e.g. The Servant)and nephew of William Somerset Maughan is attached in side the frount page of the book. Written in 1955, it might be possible that Betjeman was referring to Maugham's newly published book called "Behind the Mirror". Betjeman had written a review of the book in the Daily Telegraph in which is said ‘Robin Maugham can write ... the sincerity of the author and his gift of narrative and brief[ly], certain powers of describing a scene, character make him a fiction addict's delight.'
